El ácido nítrico (HNO3, CAS 7697-37-2) es un ácido mineral tóxico que también se denomina agua fuerte o aqua fortis. Es incoloro, pero puede tornarse de un color amarillo pálido al exponerse al aire. Las soluciones que contienen más del 86 % de ácido nítrico se denominan “ácido nítrico fumante”.
Generalmente, el ácido nítrico se encuentra disponible como aezótropo (68 %) o como reactivo (70 %). En el laboratorio, se utiliza en la síntesis de nitroderivados y como reactivo analítico, agente oxidante fuerte y colorante intermedio.
En la industria, el ácido nítrico se utiliza para fabricar tintas, colorantes y fertilizantes nitrogenados; producir plásticos y polímeros y fabricar explosivos como el trinitrotolueno (TNT) y la nitroglicerina.
El ácido nítrico tiene una naturaleza muy corrosiva, por lo que debe usarse equipo de protección individual (EPI) para reducir la exposición dañina al ácido y sus vapores. Entre los riesgos se incluyen la inhalación, la ingestión y la absorción, con posibles daños graves en los ojos, la piel y las membranas mucosas.
Almacene el ácido nítrico lejos de los materiales incompatibles, incluidos los compuestos orgánicos, los metales, los alcoholes y las bases.
